At Columbia School of English
we focus on building the English-language skills necessary for
academic and professional success. As you are continuing your
journey towards gaining knowledge and furthering your understanding
of the world, we want to be right there with you every step of the
way. Our camp programs include local tours of Portland and
university campus visits, and are arranged for both youth and adults
in the summer and winter. Trips to U.S. Attractions, such as
Disneyland, San Francisco or New York City, can be included.
Columbia School of English’s English
camp consists of a four week program that seeks to improve students’
skills in academic reading, writing, oral communication and
listening comprehension. The program goal is to equip English
language learners with all of the skills necessary to further
English language-skills and experience life in the United States.
Students will engage in different
non-academic daily activities as well, which include playing
different sports with other students, community involvement
activities or listening to a guest speaker session who will share
life-enriching experiences. Here at the Columbia School of English,
we want to immerse our students into the American culture and let
them feel comfortable in the new environment. In accomplishing this
goal, we have established a buddy system, where a local Oregonian
will partner up with an international student for the duration of
the program. Both students will engage in various activities
together and practice in language exchange as well as cultural
exchange. This is a great opportunity for our students to be able to
learn more about the culture of Oregon and build a life-long
friendship.
Columbia School of English
Buddy System
Columbia School of English carefully pairs up American mentors
and friends with students based on age and interests. Throughout the
course of the program, there will be scheduled times for the two to
spend time together. The buddy system serves the purposes of having
a mentor, tutor and life-long friend. Activities such as sports,
hiking or having lunch are all encouraged. There will also be team
building workshops, as well as large group activities where the two
can further develop leadership skills together. Although not
required, the American mentors and friends are also encouraged to
participate in the weekend activities as well. The buddy system
provides a great opportunity for language and cultural exchange.
Students often keep in touch with their American mentor or friend as
pen pals, even after the program has finished.
